Surface & glaze

Dehua white porcelain finished with an antique-style glaze.

Variations

Slight variations in dimensions and weight between individual pieces are normal. Listed measurements are sample reference values.

Weight

Approximate piece weight: 255.8 g, excluding outer packaging.

A Song scholar's censer form, faithfully revived. The three-legged zun — modeled on Han-dynasty bronze vessels — was among the most treasured censer shapes of the Song dynasty; the Ru-kiln tripod zun censer remains one of the rarest porcelains in existence. XIANSU's rendition is made in Dehua blanc de Chine by Chen Gong, then finished and fired in Dehua.

The name

Wu Wei — "effortless action" — comes from the Tao Te Ching: act without striving, and nothing is left undone. Three feet, one bowl, nothing to adjust: set the incense down and let it burn. An everyday censer for a daily half hour.

Dimensions

Approximately 3.5 in in diameter and 2.1 in high (Ø9 × H5.3 cm). These are sample reference measurements; hand finishing and firing produce slight variations.

Open edition

An open-edition everyday piece — no numbering, stamped with the XIANSU seal and the studio seal. Fired in master kilns in Dehua.

Pairs with

XIANSU incense cakes — Jin Shu and Jing Du. Use with the supplied fire-resistant pad.

The living censer

White porcelain remembers every fire — amber patina deepens with use. This is not a stain; it is a patina. Like a well-loved teapot, it only grows more beautiful.

Use with the supplied pad

Place the supplied fire-resistant pad inside the censer before use, then position the incense securely on it. Allow the incense, pad and censer to cool completely before handling.

Care

Allow the piece to cool fully. Remove ash with a soft brush or cloth. Where suitable for the glazed finish, clean incense-oil residue with a little mild dish soap and a soft cloth, rinse and dry promptly; do not soak. Avoid impact, abrasive cleaners and thermal shock. Burn incense on a stable, heat-resistant surface with ventilation, and never leave it unattended.

Note

Each piece is hand-finished; slight variations in form and glaze are the mark of the maker's hand.
