Care & Ritual

Incense cakes

Place the supplied fire-resistant pad in the designated incense-safe container or a suitable censer before use. Carefully light the incense cake, then gently extinguish the open flame so the ember can smolder. Position the cake securely on the pad. Use only in a ventilated space, away from combustible materials. Never leave burning incense unattended.

Incense sticks

Light one end and blow out the flame, leaving a glowing ember. Use an appropriate incense holder or heat-resistant censer with a fire-resistant pad underneath to collect ash. Ensure the stick cannot topple or contact flammable material.

Porcelain

Allow the vessel to cool completely before handling or cleaning. Remove cooled ash with a soft brush or cloth. For suitable glazed porcelain, incense-oil residue may be cleaned with a small amount of mild dish soap and a soft cloth, then rinsed with clean water and dried promptly. Do not soak the piece. This does not apply to unglazed Xiao Man or delicate applied finishes; follow their specific care instructions. Otherwise, where suitable for the finish, wipe gently with a slightly damp soft cloth and dry promptly; avoid abrasive cleaners, sudden temperature changes or impact. Delicate applied finishes require special care. Do not use in ovens, dishwashers or microwaves unless the item is specifically rated for that purpose.

Unglazed porcelain

Xiao Man has an unglazed, matte bisque finish. Clean it only after it has cooled, using a soft dry cloth or brush. Do not soak it, rinse it under water or use detergents; the porous surface can absorb oils and smoke marks and develop a patina over time.

Patina & handmade character

With normal incense use, gradual smoke-toning and patina can develop on the surface. This is expected use-related change, provided it does not indicate a genuine product defect. Our porcelain and lacquer-basket pieces are finished by hand, so subtle differences in dimensions, glaze, tone and texture are natural.

Lacquer baskets & silk

Keep lacquer baskets away from prolonged direct sunlight, extreme heat, standing water and harsh cleaners. Dust with a soft dry cloth. Preserve silk scarves away from flame, incense ash and prolonged sun exposure; follow any care label supplied with the scarf.

Safety

Keep burning incense and hot vessels away from children, pets, drafts and flammable objects. Use a stable, heat-resistant surface and adequate ventilation. Never leave incense unattended. Ensure the ember is fully extinguished before disposal. Packaging and acrylic storage containers are not automatically heatproof burners: only burn incense inside a vessel explicitly designed and confirmed suitable for heat.

California Proposition 65 WARNING: Burning incense can expose you to chemicals including carbon monoxide, soot (carbon black), and formaldehyde, which are known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Censers and fire-resistant pads

All XIANSU censers are used with the supplied fire-resistant pad. Place the pad inside the censer before positioning incense on it. Wu Wei is recommended for incense cakes, including Jin Shu and Jing Du.
