Pear sweetness meets the depth of fragrant wood, an accompaniment to quiet reading. The story of Pear-in-the-Curtain Incense is associated with Li Yu, the Southern Tang poet; XIANSU brings that literary association into the present.

The name

Jin Shu means a letter on brocade. Its name recalls Li Qingzhao’s verse about a letter arriving from among the clouds. A box of incense can also be a letter to oneself.

The story behind the fragrance

Pear-in-the-Curtain Incense is associated with the Southern Tang ruler Li. Chen shi xiangpu preserves several formulas under his name: one steams agarwood with pear juice; another places powdered agarwood and sandalwood inside hollowed pears before steaming and blending. Fruit and wood meet through preparation as well as fragrance.

That literary history is the starting point for Jin Shu: sweet pear, woody agarwood and warm honey notes accompanying a quiet evening with a book.

Historical reference: Chen shi xiangpu, volume 2
